Having delivered the construction of the original store, Careys Building & Civil Engineering was appointed to carry out the civil and reinforced concrete works for the IKEA Dublin extension. These extension works were carried out in a live environment, requiring a bespoke approach to works, along with a traffic management plan to prevent disruption to road users. Key to the project’s success was our ability to develop a programme which accounted for the needs of road users and local businesses when delivering works.

Our team began works by removing the existing coach parking area, storing street furniture for re-use in the works, and excavating for the extension. Once these works were completed, we proceeded to construct new foul and storm sewers, RC foundations and the RC retaining wall and ramp entrance to the undercroft car park.

Our team was also responsible for installation of the necessary pipework to extend the sprinkler system to the extension from the on-site water storage tanks, and diverting live services to enable progress of the development. After completion of the superstructure, we carried out all hard and soft landscaping works to the extension including surfacing of the undercroft car park and service yard access road.

As the works were carried out in and around a fully operational store, we developed a detailed traffic management plan with the store management team to ensure access was available at all times for deliveries to the store’s service area, as well as to and from Ballymun United FC’s grounds situated next to the extension. Regular liaison with local stakeholders, including Dublin Bus and An Garda Siochana Traffic Corps was essential to maintaining the client’s reputation in the local area, with our team playing a key role in successfully delivering the project with minimal disruption.
